“I got this job because I promised I could make a home for those, shall we say, formidable pieces,” Charles jokes. Ultimately she placed a pair of chairs in the primary bath—thrones for the throne room—and installed the chandelier in the towering entertainment pavilion. “We thought it would be funny to have this incredibly opulent thing hanging in a barn. It kind of takes the piss out of the property,” Kunis says of the improbable crystal confection. When Falotico and Willette built this cove, they didn’t intend for it to function as the main dining area, but the Mitchells loved the glass-enclosed space so much that they forwent a formal dining table, which was supposed to sit just outside the wine cellar. With the bucolic charm of rural life and the stylish comforts of 21st century living, the modern farmhouse really does offer the best of both worlds. Pitched roofs, exposed beams, and the enthusiastic use of natural materials may be the charming hallmarks of a classic farmhouse, but these interiors truly sing when combined with contemporary elements. Below, we share eight homes, published by AD, that flawlessly exemplify this principle.

Underwood Family Farms welcomes schools and groups to visit their family farm to enjoy the beauty of Ventura County and to gain a positive farm experience. They offer strawberry, vegetable, pumpkin, animal, & combination tours which are very educational and lots of fun! You can also enjoy the convenience of shopping at the Farm Market for the same field-fresh produce. True to the name, the farmhouse design style has its roots in actual farmhouses or shelters that were built specifically for farmers. Though homes on farmlands have existed for as long as farmers have, many attribute the traditional farmhouses in Europe from the 16th and 17th centuries as the inspiration for this specific aesthetic. “Over the years the simple farmhouse has evolved into a distinct design style,” Krason says.

And you’re near Temecula and Fallbrook if you feel like venturing out for some wine tasting, hot air ballooning, or strawberry picking. And though most design professionals would encourage people to follow their own tastes—whether something is in vogue or not—it’s not uncommon to wonder about the realistic lifespan of something as permanent as your home’s design. Though Krasson assures the aesthetic won’t feel dated anytime soon, another way to approach the question is to consider the values that the look emulates. Shea says that her clients who are most eager to embrace this look are drawn to its ability to be equally durable and utilitarian as it is elevated and sophisticated. “Life in general has become so chaotic in the past few years,” she says. The Gentle Barn’s mission is to “Teaching People Kindness and Compassion to Animals, Each Other and our Planet.”  A visit to barn provides children from any background a great opportunity to learn about farm animals with their unique features and personalities.

Wildwood Cottage is a super charming converted schoolhouse that sits on three shared acres of beautiful land.

The farm features educational tours where kids may feed and handle farm animals, and pick fruits, vegetables, and even flowers. “We wanted the house to look like an old barn, something that had been here for decades, that was then converted into a house. Eclectic lodging and African animals galore await you—antelope, zebra, and giraffes (oh my!). All units have satellite TV and amenities like linens, kitchen pans and utensils, as well as a fireplace.

Quasi-Experimental Research Designs : Clinical Nurse Specialist

quasi-experimental design research

Variables a and b should assess similar constructs; that is, the two measures should be affected by similar factors and confounding variables except for the effect of the intervention. Taking our example, variable a could be pharmacy costs and variable b could be the length of stay of patients. If our informatics intervention is aimed at decreasing pharmacy costs, we would expect to observe a decrease in pharmacy costs but not in the average length of stay of patients. However, a number of important confounding variables, such as severity of illness and knowledge of software users, might affect both outcome measures.

Interrupted Time Series Design

quasi-experimental design research

If at the end of the study there was a difference in the two classes’ knowledge of fractions, it might have been caused by the difference between the teaching methods—but it might have been caused by any of these confounding variables. The main advantage of this design is that it controls for potentially different time-varying confounding effects in the intervention group and the comparison group. In our example, measuring points O1 and O2 would allow for the assessment of time-dependent changes in pharmacy costs, e.g., due to differences in experience of residents, preintervention between the intervention and control group, and whether these changes were similar or different. In some implementation science contexts, policy-makers or administrators may not be willing to have a subset of participating patients or sites randomized to a control condition, especially for high-profile or high-urgency clinical issues. Quasi-experimental designs allow implementation scientists to conduct rigorous studies in these contexts, albeit with certain limitations. We briefly review the characteristics of these designs here; other recent review articles are available for the interested reader (e.g. Handley et al., 2018).

Pretest-Posttest Design

For instance, providing public healthcare to one group and withholding it to another in research is unethical. A quasi-experimental design would examine the relationship between these two groups to avoid physical danger. Instead of allocating these patients at random, you uncover pre-existing psychotherapist groups in the hospitals. Clearly, there’ll be counselors who are eager to undertake these trials as well as others who prefer to stick to the old ways. This means that each person has an equivalent chance of being assigned to the experimental group or the control group, depending on whether they are manipulated or not.

Interrupted Time Series

For example, consider a hypothetical RCT that aims to evaluate the implementation of a training program for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in community clinics. Randomizing at the patient level for such a trial would be inappropriate due to the risk of contamination, as providers trained in CBT might reasonably be expected to incorporate CBT principles into their treatment even to patients assigned to the control condition. Randomizing at the provider level would also risk contamination, as providers trained in CBT might discuss this treatment approach with their colleagues. While such clustering minimizes the risk of contamination, it can unfortunately create commensurate problems with confounding, especially for trials with very few sites to randomize. Stratification may be used to at least partially address confounding issues in cluster- randomized and more traditional trials alike, by ensuring that intervention and control groups are broadly similar on certain key variables. Furthermore, such allocation schemes typically require analytic models that account for this clustering and the resulting correlations among error structures (e.g., generalized estimating equations [GEE] or mixed-effects models; Schildcrout et al., 2018).

Create a file for external citation management software

Nonetheless, there are design strategies for non-experimental studies that can be undertaken to improve the internal validity while not eliminating considerations of external validity. There is a relative hierarchy within these categories of study designs, with category D studies being sounder than categories C, B, or A in terms of establishing causality. Thus, if feasible from a design and implementation point of view, investigators should aim to design studies that fall in to the higher rated categories.

However, it doesn't use randomization, the lack of which is a crucial element for quasi-experimental design. A quasi-experimental design allows researchers to take advantage of previously collected data and use it in their study. For instance, it's impractical to trawl through large sample sizes of participants without using a particular attribute to guide your data collection.

Zombre et al (52) maintained a large number of control number of sites during the extended study period and were able to look at variations in seasonal trends as well as clinic-level characteristics, such as workforce density and sustainability. In addition to including a control group, several analysis phase strategies can be employed to strengthen causal inference including adjustment for time varying confounders and accounting for auto correlation. It can be useful to obtain pre-test data or baseline characteristics to improve the comparability of the two groups.

The design involved matching clinics by size and an inverse roll-out, to balance out the sizes across the four groups. The inverse roll-out involved four strata of clinics, grouped by size with two clinics in each strata. The roll-out was sequenced across these eight clinics, such that one smaller clinics began earlier, with three clinics of increasing size getting the intervention afterwards.

quasi-experimental design research

For example, Li, Raymond, and Peter Bergman explore how algorithm design can improve the quality of interview decisions in the context of professional services hiring. They find that while traditional supervised learning systems — which look for workers who match historical patterns of success in the firm’s training data — select higher-quality workers relative to human hiring, they are also far less likely to select applicants who are Black or Hispanic. In contrast, reinforcement learning and contextual bandit models — which value learning about workers who have not traditionally been represented in the firm’s training data — are able to deliver similar improvements in worker quality while also distributing job opportunities more broadly. Later, the focus shifted to machine learning systems, including “supervised learning” systems trained to make predictions based on large datasets of human-labeled examples. As computational power increased, deep learning algorithms became increasingly successful, leading to an explosion of interest in AI in the 2010s. A set of measurements taken at intervals over a period of time that are interrupted by a treatment.

“Resemblance” is the definition of “quasi.” Individuals are not randomly allocated to conditions or orders of conditions, even though the regression analysis is changed. As a result, quasi-experimental research is research that appears to be experimental but is not. In a classic 1952 article, researcher Hans Eysenck pointed out the shortcomings of the simple pretest-posttest design for evaluating the effectiveness of psychotherapy. The study by Grant et al et al uses a variant of the SWD for which individuals within a setting are enumerated and then randomized to get the intervention.

Therefore, hospital personnel often implement one or more interventions, and if a decline in the rate occurs, they may mistakenly conclude that the decline is causally related to the intervention. This design is employed when it is not ethical or logistically feasible to conduct randomized controlled trials. Researchers typically employ it when evaluating policy or educational interventions, or in medical or therapy scenarios.

An introductory chapter describes the valuable role these types of studies have played in social work, going back to the 1930s, and continuing to the present. Subsequent chapters describe the major features of individual quasi-experimental designs, the types of questions they are capable of answering, and their strengths and limitations. Each discussion of these designs presented in the abstract is subsequently illustrated with descriptions of real examples of their use as published in the social work literature and related fields. By linking the discussion of quasi-experimental designs in the abstract to actualapplications to evaluate the outcomes of social services, the usefulness and vitality of these research methods comes alive to the reader. While this volume could be used as a research textbook, it will also have great value to practitioners seeking a greater conceptual understanding of the quasi-experimental studies they frequently read about in the social work literature.

This design involves studying the effects of an intervention or event that occurs naturally, without the researcher’s intervention. For example, a researcher might study the effects of a new law or policy that affects certain groups of people. Quasi-experimental design is a research method that seeks to evaluate the causal relationships between variables, but without the full control over the independent variable(s) that is available in a true experimental design.

The 8 Best Whole House Water Filters of 2024 to Improve Your Water Quality

whole house water filtration system

You will obviously purchase the filter with some tools pre-packaged and all you have to do is follow the instruction manual. You are likely to take a lot of time due to the many fittings and the 1-inch threads. Chlorine is a great disinfectant that will eliminate some contaminants from your water, but large quantities of this chemical may be harmful to your health. The EcoPure includes a mounting bracket, a 6-month filter, the system itself, a vent tube and installation instructions. You are sure to get better testing and even cleaner water without feeling any significant drop in the flow of water. Good Housekeeping participates in various affiliate marketing programs, which means we may get paid commissions on editorially chosen products purchased through our links to retailer sites.

Flow Rate (GPM) (20%)

Then, there is an iron and manganese filter that uses ion exchange to catch unwanted particles and reduces chlorine. We like that each filter has clear housing that lets you know when it’s time to change out the filters. Plus, the stainless steel pressure gauges make it easy to keep an eye on how the system is functioning. However, since it has three separate filters, this means keeping track of and changing three separate filters every six months, which cost $125 for a bundle.

How do I choose a whole-house water filter?

whole house water filtration system

This UV filter does not have the ability to filter sediment or heavy metals, so if you’re in an area where you find that you need these things filtered, you may want to choose another filtering system. The GE Whole House Water Filtration System is the most affordable pick on our list while still effectively filtering sediment, scale, dirt, and rust from your water. It also is effective in eliminating chlorine, which is often used when treating city water. With a moderate price point and effective carbon filtration, the 3M Aqua-Pure Whole House Water Filter is our pick for the best whole house water filter overall. Be sure it’s in a reachable spot because you’ll have to change the filter as required. To install, remove a portion of the pipe, fit the filter between, and solder the connections so that they stay put.

Operational Temperature and Pressure Range

Some people are so used to drinking chlorinated water that the absence of it might seem strange at first. Even though chlorine is a pretty good disinfectant and it will remove most of the bacteria and other microorganisms in the water, it can actually bad for you. Recent studies have shown that ingesting large quantities can be dangerous to your health.

Flow Rate

The first is air induction oxidation (AIO), which works by spraying water over an air pocket to allow sulfur, iron, and manganese to become solid particles that can then be filtered out. The other is greensand, which has a similar effect and also traps the solid particles in its bed. The SpringWell SS1 is the best whole-house filter for hard water, aka the best water softener, because it offers superior softening capabilities along with high efficiency and an industry-best lifetime warranty. It’s true that it doesn’t tackle other stuff, such as hard water, microbes, or fluoride, and doesn’t work on well water.

The 3M Aqua-Pure AP903 uses a new Sanitary Quick Change design to help you change the filter easily. Manu users noted better taste and general quality of water after they installed the filter, but some complained about reduced water pressure. This might be because the flow rate is somewhat low, and you’ll also need to check your filter for sediment build-up, as this affects water pressure as well.

That way, every appliance, faucet and person who comes into contact with your water gets clean, fresh water. This is another optional step, but it’s more frequent than the water softener. The post-filter plays an important role in producing high-quality water. When the water reaches this post-filter, it’s usually filled with very small particles because the larger ones would have already been filtered out. The post-filters role is to stop these small particles from reaching your water.

It is important to maintain home water treatment systems regularly and changing water filters is a crucial part of it. Changing the filters can vary between models, but most follow the same principle. When the water enters an ion-exchange filter, it will pass over some resin beads.

The 7 Best Whole-House Water Filters of 2024

whole house water filtration system

If you have city water, a whole-house water filter can remove chemicals before they ever get to your faucet. Even well water users may need a whole-house water filter; wells need to be constantly monitored for quality and bacteria, and a whole-house filter can ensure consistent water quality. On average, whole house water filters cost $700-$1,800 upfront and around $0-$300 per year to maintain. Most of the whole house well water filters we’ve looked at were excellent at removing one specific contaminant, but could only remove trace levels of the other common well water impurities. That meant we were able to comprehensively tackle the taste and aesthetic issues of all three contaminants with a single system.

Best Filter/Softener Combo

We gathered information about the common water quality concerns across the U.S, and examined whether whole house water filters were an adequate solution to removing the problem contaminants. When we were testing and shortlisting the whole house water filtration systems in this guide, there were tens of factors that we needed to account for. How did we choose the best systems for different preferences and situations?

The water then passes through an ultraviolet system that kills any bacteria or viruses that might still be in the water, and the water is directed to appliances or the water heater. Using a home test water kit, you can determine the contaminants present in your water in about half an hour. With this information in mind, you will be able to find the right model in no time whatsoever.

I Paid a Little More for This Brita Water Filter Pitcher, and It Was Worth It

It eliminates about 98% of the impurities passing through it such as chlorine, sediments and other contaminants. With this filter, you can rest assured that all the odors, color, and even foul tastes will be eliminated. The Express Water whole house water filter offers the perfect solution for all your water needs around the house. What sets this filter apart is that it has a pressure gauge and a pressure release button for easier use and monitoring. It is equipped with a three-stage filtration which will ensure that there is no rust, chlorine, pesticides, herbicides, industrial solvents, sediments and VOC’s among other pollutants.

whole house water filtration system

Water filters are designed to purify your water by eliminating harmful impurities such as chlorine, lead and pesticides, with the level of removal varying by the filter's sophistication. They can also improve the taste — and in some cases, the clarity — of the water. The tank on a whole-house water filtration system will need to be replaced every three to 10 years, depending on the size of your system and how much water passes through it. The sediment pre-filter will need to be replaced every three to six months. A whole-house water filter purifies your water from the very moment it enters your home through the main waterline — rather than dealing with individual filters, all the water in your home is filtered from the start.

Q. Do I need a whole-house water filter?

If your tap water does exceed EWG health guidelines, it may be a good idea to consider buying a water filter. Access to safe drinking water is an issue across the globe, and it affects communities in the United States. If you’re not sure about your water quality, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) updated its Tap Water Database in 2021. The Larq PurVis Pitcher filters over 45 contaminants such as microplastics, heavy metals, VOCs, endocrine disruptors, PFOA and PFOS, pharmaceuticals and more.

But our own experience installing the Kind E-1000 was so smooth and simple that we would recommend that everyone at least unboxes the system and reads the instructions before hiring a professional to do the job for them. Out of the box, the unit had refreshingly few components for us to worry about. It requires only two connections, and there are no fiddly parts and very little potential for making mistakes.

If you prefer to spend less money upfront on a cartridge-based whole house water filtration system, we think the Kind E-1000 Whole House Water Filter can’t be beaten. But the system doesn’t just make basic aesthetic improvements to water’s taste – it also removes dangerous trace contaminants like VOCs, PFAS, and pesticides. The market for point of entry water filters is growing, and we now have more choices than ever before. That’s great – but it does complicate the buying process, especially since not all filters are right for every home or situation. Plus, these are those that simply aren’t worth your money due to poor design or performance. We looked through whole house water filter reviews to filter out products with low ratings and over 5% of negative reviews.

If after you install it, you notice the WS1 is flushing itself more than once a day or you can see sediment in your water, you may want to invest in a second pre-filter with a 5-micron rating. If you know you have more than just iron, sulfur, and manganese in your well, read my review on the best whole-house filter for well water to see my top picks for all the different contaminants that can be found in wells. This means that once you install the WS1, you will have to spend very little to no money and time making sure it’s working optimally, and you can trust it’s delivering clean, clear water at all times. This means the SpringWell WS1 can filter out sulfur, iron, or manganese without exposing you to nasty chemicals or affecting the taste or smell of your water. This means that unless you are on a zero-sodium diet as prescribed by your doctor or live in California, the added sodium produced by the SS1 isn’t going to be a big deal. But if you do fit into one of these two categories, you’ll want to check out some water softener alternatives to find the right product for you.

This means that if you have both hard water and high levels of sulfur, iron, and/or manganese, you don’t need to sacrifice quality by mixing and matching softeners and filters. You can get one SpringWell unit, which allows you to combine the highest-rated products in each category for maximum value. The SpringWell CF1 is the best whole-house water filter on the market because of its effectiveness against the most harmful and common contaminants in city water as well as its lifetime warranty. This does not mean that all whole house water filters can fix a hard water problem, but some, like the Aquasure Whole House Filtration, our pick for the best for calcium, have a water softening setting built in.

If you detect contaminants in your water, a filtration system can be worth the investment, too. Filter changes and maintenance determine the overall convenience and affordability of a whole house filtration system. Filter lifespans were evaluated against their level of filtration and the average number of months it will last with regular use.

To install a whole-house water filtration system, you need to have access to your home’s main water supply line. This improves the taste, odor, and overall quality of the water, filtering out any particles larger than 5 microns in size. In the first stage, unwanted sediment is eliminated from the water before it progresses to the second stage of purification where dirt, organic chemicals, and other suspended particles are also removed. In the final stage, chemicals such as VOCs and chlorine are further eliminated to ensure the output water is properly filtered. The whole house water filter also has a granular activated carbon filter that is often used for systems that perform reverse osmosis. The Kind E-1000 Whole House Water Filter is one of the most capable cartridge-based whole house water filters we’ve tested, removing tens of contaminants from our water without affecting our flow rate.

This pick also takes it a step further by using UV light to deactivate E. Coli and Salmonella, which can build up in water filter pitchers when chlorine is filtered out. This under-the-sink filter system eliminates chlorine, heavy metals, cysts, herbicides, pesticides, VOCs and more. It's also the one used in the home of former GH Institute Beauty, Health and Sustainability Lab Director Birnur Aral, Ph.D. Our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have rigorously tested and analyzed more than 30 water filters to find the best ones you can buy. The water filters we're reviewing here include whole-house water filters, under-the-sink water filters, water filter pitchers, water filter bottles and shower water filters.

When it’s time to change the filter, users don’t need to unscrew the filter; instead, they’ll just pull the locking latch upward, turn it a quarter-turn to the left, then pull down. Replace the filter cartridge, then reattach the filter and lock the latch to secure the house filter with no leaks. The only items this whole-home filtration system won't remove are bacteria and viruses. It can also be quite leaky, since some parts that connect to your plumbing are made of plastic and not as durable.

It will also remove contaminants including chloramine, VOCs, pesticides, haloacetic acids, bad odor, taste and controls the growth of bacteria. This filtration system has three stages of filtering, including a sediment filter, an activated carbon filter, and a filter to remove heavy metals. Filtering out these contaminants is good not only for your drinking water, but for prolonging the life of your appliances.

The pandemic has made us reevaluate many aspects our of lives, including our workplace. As offices begin to reopen, many employees are deciding to make a major career shift. In fact, some studies are finding that up to 41% of the global workforce would consider leaving their current employer in the next year — it’s being called the “Great Resignation”.

Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely. The leadership team asked me questions about my creation, adding their ideas about the recipe, product packaging and more — challenging me to make the Brookie even better. They truly just want to see you succeed. Used 16 oz of chocolate chips, chilled minutes as several recommended, I cooked for 12 minutes.

As a leader in baking for more than 80 years, Ruth's innovative spirit continues to drive Nestlé Toll House today. With a strong focus on new product innovations, the iconic brand is constantly expanding its offering to meet the changing demands of the modern baker. Ruth's 'Toll House Crunch Cookie' recipe was published in a Boston newspaper and her invention of the chocolate chip cookie quickly became the most popular cookie of all-time. Together, Nestlé USA employees are transforming the company into a large-scale disrupter in the industry.

Also, why omit (or include) the teaspoon of hot water? We all strive for the perfect chocolate chip cookie, usually the cookie we remember from childhood. The Nestle Toll House Cookie Recipe is the first recipe many of us ever made, often with our mothers or grandmothers. This classic chocolate chip cookie recipe is one that has been enjoyed for decades. The original Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe is proof you can't go wrong with a classic. Looking ahead, Nestlé Toll House will continue to bring innovation to the baking aisle and Ruth's timeless discovery of the chocolate chip cookie will continue to be a cherished classic for generations to come.

Ingredients

10 wasn’t enough, at least not with my oven. Deliciously chewy, slightly browned. My aunt made the best ones from the recipe on the bag of Baker's. Her secret (which I swore I would never tell my mother) was creaming (in a mixer) the butter and sugars for 3 minutes then a minute after each egg. And she put them in the fridge for 30 minutes and returned the batter to the fridge between baking batches.

Whenever I’d bake the Nestle cookie recipe from the back of the chocolate chip bag, I’d end up adding a couple of spoonfuls more flour to the dough to get it the right consistency. This recipe uses slightly more flour than the original in comparison to the amount of butter in the recipe. The thing is, small innovations lead to big disruption, and that’s what being an innovative company is all about. I always increase the flour to 2 1/2 cups, and decrease both sugars to 2/3 cup each. They are plenty sweet, and the texture is perfect - crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside.

Leading up to our pitch, we don’t just present the rough idea we started with, we work with chefs and marketers to make the best version of our product and build a strong business case for the idea to move forward. Used French butter and added 4 oz broken-up high-quality dark chocolate. Dessert should be exciting, whether making someone’s day with a gift or just escaping for a moment of quiet-me-time. Each loved up recipe is hand finished with artisan flair for a legendary temptation.

When I started my role with the Nestlé finance team, I could never have imagined I’d go on to be the founder of my own product. Launching the Brookie has been an incredibly rewarding experience, packed with lessons about how foods go from small ideas in the kitchen to products in consumer’s hands, and enriched by the collaboration with peer and leadership teams. When I heard about Open Channel, an internal crowd-sourcing initiative that empowers Nestlé USA employees to submit ideas we believe will be the next crowd-pleaser, I immediately knew I wanted to get involved. Mrs. Wakefield's obituary in the NYT says she chilled the dough overnight.

I’m excited to see which of my colleagues’ creative ideas to life next, and I hope you’re tapping into your curiosity right now to find a career that allows you to innovate the next big thing. By the time I met with leadership, the Brookie was no longer just the brownie-cookie mashup I’d created and iterated in my kitchen, it was a real product that I believed in, felt ownership of, and felt confident would be a hit with consumers. I was armed with new knowledge of the consumer and the category, and ready to put it to the test. The Brookie is the result of a mass brainstorm, a giant incubator, and the kind of agile innovation you’d expect to find at a start-up rather than a large company with more than a century of history behind it. Open Channel gives employees at all stages of their career an opportunity to feel more empowered, more engaged, and more curious about their place of work — without the need for job hunting.

Store dough, covered, in refrigerator for up to 1 week or in freezer for up to 8 weeks. Get recipes, tips and NYT special offers delivered straight to your inbox. I would remember to have some milk nearby though. I noticed that a few years ago when they reduced the size of the package from 14 oz to 12 oz, they changed the recipe.

Design Principles A List of the Principles of Design

basic design principles

When used effectively, harmony can help to achieve a sense of balance and calm in a design. However, too much harmony can result in a design that feels monotonous or bland. As with all principles of design, the key is to find the right balance for the specific project you are working on. Contrast holds a special place among the principles of design. It refers to the use of distinct elements to create visual interest and break up the monotony. Contrast can be created through the use of color, shape, size, and texture.

Balance in Graphic Design

Be trustworthy and credible – identify yourself through your design to assure users and eliminate the uncertainty. Offer few options – don’t hinder users with nice-to-haves; give them needed alternatives instead. That jarring moment of slight confusion is what makes this design so revolutionary and rewarding.

The relation between the shape and the space is called figure/ground, where the shape is the figure and the area around the shape is the ground. We should be aware that when designing positive shapes, we are also designing negative spaces at the same time. Negative space is just as important as the positive shape itself — because it helps to define the boundaries of the positive space and brings balance to a composition.

What Are the Principles of Design? A Complete Breakdown

Then, I'll cover the principles that guide the use of these elements, from contrast to pattern, ensuring your design looks good and feels right. Hopefully, now you have a high-level understanding of design principles and have a better idea of how to implement them in your future designs. Proportion in design refers to the size and visual weight of two or more visual elements. When you start learning graphic design theory, you may be surprised to find out that there are specific rules you need to follow when designing. Alignment is one of the most important factors in creating a good design. When content is aligned, it creates a sense of unity and order, which makes it easier for people to scan through your designs and understand what they’re looking at.

Also known as "white space," this design element uses space as part of the design. It can also use the other elements to create the illusion of added information, which tricks the eye into thinking something is there. The elements of design are the building blocks of visual art, including point, line, shape, and space.

They include things like alignment, balance, contrast, proximity, and more. Following these basic design principles will help you create a more cohesive and engaging brand. The key is not to overthink them or try to memorize them all at once, but rather just pick one each week and work on it until you’re comfortable using it in your designs. The principles of design are a set of guidelines for creating an effective visual design. They are taught in art classes, and they can be used by anyone who has an interest in design. Repetition is one of the easiest design principles to use in your designs.

basic design principles

Alignment refers to how visual elements are lined up, ordered, and structured in comparison to one another and in comparison to the whole design. There are different types of contrast, such as color contrast or size, shape, or texture contrast. When there is an emphasis on a design element, it means that the specific object is highlighted from the rest and is therefore of great significance and importance.

Command attention with focal points

As designs become more complex, they evoke feelings that form experiences. Fundamentally, it helps us shape the world we live in and impact the way we perceive reality. Good design isn’t about many years of practice and thousands of hours spent in graphic editor tools. The beauty of this craft is that it’s accessible to all, given that they have a surface level understanding of its principles and the basic design elements. Graphic design is often misunderstood as a matter of style preference. When assessing graphic design, it's essential to check whether the most vital design principles have been applied.

Hierarchy and emphasis

Let’s take a quick look at a famous example of the similarity principle visualized by the Nielsen Norman Group. Lines are the most seamless and most powerful elements of design. We use them to separate and organize space, outline and contour objects, emphasize certain elements, draw attention, and so forth. Unlike art, graphic design always needs to fulfill a specific purpose, and contrast is often the tool by which this is achieved. Proximity, or visual closeness between two objects, is achieved when the designer aligns elements so that the eye can perceive a connection or distance between them. The app icon designs in iOS 6 and earlier mimic the glossy texture of glass to incite users to tap them.

There can also be a search bar for users to enter keywords to search for a specific topic and save time. We read from top to bottom, so the viewer's eye must be first drawn immediately to essential information before they start scrolling down the page. There is a higher color contrast between the background color and foreground (text) color. Say there is an element with a light grey background and some dark grey text. Then, there is another element with the same background color, but there is some black text.

Design unity is that different visual elements are combined to create a cohesive, complete design with a harmonious effect. With unity, seemingly different items create a sense of 'oneness'. Designers should understand how these design principles and elements affect their work. Looking at how other designers use these concepts can help you learn to create better designs. The principles of design are a set of guidelines that help designers create aesthetically pleasing work. These principles are used in all forms of art, but most notably in graphic design.

“Accidentally” grouping elements which are not conceptually similar will result in confused users. Illustration of visual design elements and principles that include unity, Gestalt, hierarchy, balance, contrast, scale and dominance. All of the other principles of design deal with what you add to your design. White space (or negative space) is the only one that specifically deals with what you don’t add.

Emphasis is the process of making one element of a design stand out from the rest. This can be done through color, size, position, or even with motion design. The key is to use emphasis judiciously, as too much can be just as ineffective as too little. When used correctly, emphasis can help to guide the viewer's eye around a composition and highlight the most important elements.

We can use them to create shapes, and when we repeat them, we can form patterns that create textures. Unity helps guide the viewer's attention and ensures a consistent, integrated visual experience. The absence of unity can make a design feel disjointed or chaotic. To comprehend unity and other fundamental aspects of design, consider exploring the building blocks of visual design on interaction-design.org. Color is not traditionally classified as a principle of design in art.

If you limit yourself to two strong typefaces or three strong colors, you’ll soon find you’ll have to repeat some things. It’s often said that repetition unifies and strengthens a design. If only one thing on your band poster is in blue italic sans-serif, it can read like an error. If three things are in blue italic sans-serif, you’ve created a motif and are back in control of your design. As you seek out examples of really strong, effective design, you’ll notice most designs only feature one or two typefaces. That’s because contrast can be effectively achieved with two strong fonts (or even one strong typeface in different weights).

I would remember to have some milk nearby though. I noticed that a few years ago when they reduced the size of the package from 14 oz to 12 oz, they changed the recipe.

Not too dense and perfectly chewy, this quick treat is exactly what a cookie should be. However, one of my favorite things about baking the same recipes for years is all the little adaptions I come up with over time. If you’re like me (and my mother and her mother before here) you do the same. Sustainably sourcing ingredients is also key to a great tasting cookie. That is why all chocolate in Nestlé Toll House products is responsibly sourced through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan and all cookie dough products are now made with 100% cage-free eggs.

That’s a team I’m proud to create with, to iterate with, and to disrupt with. The idea to our Executive Leadership Team. The pitch to leadership is an exciting moment for Open Channel founders.

8 best Italy cruises for a Mediterranean vacation

Making things worse, the crew had dropped the anchor incorrectly, causing the ship to flop over even more dramatically. Almost immediately questions were raised concerning the conduct of Schettino and other crew officers. In July 2013 four crew members and Costa Crociere’s crisis coordinator pled guilty to various charges, including manslaughter. That same month Schettino went on trial after being denied a plea bargain.

Environmental concerns and salvage

With Giglio Island lying in a protected marine area, environmental issues relating to the Concordia wreck were of particular concern. The vessel was on the edge of an underwater cliff, leading to worries that the ship might slip and break apart, causing an oil spill. To lessen any potential damage, oil booms were placed around the wreckage, and in February 2012 salvage workers began removing more than 2,000 tons of fuel; the undertaking was completed the following month.

Safety regulations

More than 4,200 people were rescued, though 32 people died in the disaster. Several of the ship’s crew, notably Capt. Francesco Schettino, were charged with various crimes. Ritz-Carlton, which entered the cruise realm in 2021 with its 298-passenger luxury yacht, Evrima, offers an all-inclusive "yachting lifestyle" experience. This leisurely sailing features overnights in Sorrento and Taranto and two sea days with ample ways to enjoy onboard pampering.

A little more than an hour after impact, the crew began to evacuate the ship. But the report noted that some passengers testified that they didn’t hear the alarm to proceed to the lifeboats. Evacuation was made even more chaotic by the ship listing so far to starboard, making walking inside very difficult and lowering the lifeboats on one side, near to impossible.

Costa Cruises and its parent companies

Evidence introduced in Schettino’s trial suggests that the safety of his passengers and crew wasn’t his number one priority as he assessed the damage to the Concordia. The impact and water leakage caused an electrical blackout on the ship, and a recorded phone call with Costa Crociere’s crisis coordinator, Roberto Ferrarini, shows he tried to downplay and cover up his actions by saying the blackout was what actually caused the accident. During this time, work also began to remove the vessel in what was the largest maritime salvage operation in history.

There will be a Lindblad–National Geographic–certified photo instructor to help guests get perfect photos of the ship’s iconic sails and of the enchanting sights on an off-the-beaten-path itinerary to Puglia, Sicily, and the Amalfi Coast, sailing from Dubrovnik to Naples. Highlights include a private lunch at Castello degli Schiavi, an 18th-century castle used as a filming location in The Godfather movies. Small ships also visit Italy’s Adriatic Coast, including the historic Ancona, which has Roman ruins and beaches. Additional islands might appear on an Italy cruise itinerary, too, such as Sardinia, where the wild landscape affords hiking opportunities with views, and you can wander among medieval sights in the historic port city of Cagliari. Discover the vast beauty, endless activity, and rich culture of the Adriatic and Mediterranean on an Italy cruise. Only Norwegian Cruise Line offers more choices of what to do and see, and more freedom to do it your way.

Situation on deck

When launched in 2005, it was Italy’s largest cruise ship, measuring 951 feet (290 metres) long with a passenger capacity of 3,780; by comparison, the Titanic was 882.5 feet (269 metres) long and could accommodate up to 2,435 passengers. It featured four swimming pools, a casino, and reportedly the largest spa on a ship. In July 2006 the vessel undertook its maiden voyage, a seven-day cruise of the Mediterranean Sea, with stops in Italy, France, and Spain. You can be sure that the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is going to deliver high-end resort cruising, and that’s certainly the case on the 298-passenger Evrima, where Moët & Chandon will flow freely as guests sail from Rome to Malta. Passengers will immerse themselves in history as soon as they set foot on the 58-passenger Sea Cloud tall ship, built in 1931 for socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post and finance tycoon E.F. Lindblad Expeditions is operating the vessel on several Mediterranean journeys in 2024, including this Southern Italy and Sicily sailing.

The ship's spacious suites are designed with a contemporary residential feel and range in size from 300 square feet with an 81-square-foot terrace to 1,091 square feet with a 635-square-foot terrace. Costa Concordia was declared a "constructive total loss" by the cruise line's insurer, and her salvage was "one of the biggest maritime salvage operations". On 16 September 2013, the parbuckle salvage of the ship began, and by the early hours of 17 September, the ship was set upright on her underwater cradle.

Also, Viva's generous outside deck space — especially Deck 8's Ocean Boulevard with its lively Indulge Outdoor Lounge and sleek Infinity Beach pools — is ideal for scenic cruising in the Mediterranean and Adriatic. If an Italy adventure with the entire family sounds like the perfect cruise vacation in 2024, Norwegian Cruise Line's new Norwegian Viva, launching in August 2023 as the sister ship to 2022's Norwegian Prima, is an ideal playground for guests of all ages. The ship also features chicly designed spaces for relaxing and socializing, such as the Pool House lounge overlooking an aft infinity pool, a second pool located next to the alfresco restaurant Mistral, a panoramic Observation Lounge and a full-service Ritz-Carlton Spa. Azamara pioneered the concept of single-country itineraries, which allow for greater cultural immersion and even overnight stays in select ports. The cruise line's 11-night voyage in October 2024 is one of its most comprehensive.

But after eight years in the U.S. and then Italian court system, they lost their case. “For us islanders, when we remember some event, we always refer to whether it was before or after the Concordia,” said Matteo Coppa, who was 23 and fishing on the jetty when the darkened Concordia listed toward shore and then collapsed onto its side in the water. The calamity caused changes in the cruise industry like carrying more lifejackets and holding emergency drills before leaving port. Ten years after the deadly Costa Concordia cruise line disaster in Italy, survivors still vividly remember scenes of chaos they say were like something straight out of the movie "Titanic."

When it comes to Italy cruises, your best bet is to go with a small-ship sailing. Big ships tend to do the tried and true—Rome, Venice, Florence, Naples—not that there’s anything wrong with seeing the Colosseum, St. Mark’s Square, Michelangelo’s David, and the ruins of Pompeii. But on the best cruises around Italy, there’s opportunity to go deeper and at a slower pace. If so, check out Viking's 15-night Italy, the Adriatic and Greece itinerary, which sails from Athens to Rome and visits six Italian ports — Venice/Chioggia, Bari, Crotone, Messina, Naples and Rome — with three days spent in Venice. As a bonus, you'll also visit ports in Greece (Katakolon and Corfu), Croatia (Dubrovnik, Split and Sibenik) and Montenegro (Kotor).

Onboard guest speakers also offer insight into the ports visited and the cultural landscape. If enjoying yacht-style indulgence as you explore Southern Italy is on your cruise wish list, consider the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's 10-night Rome to Valletta itinerary in May 2024. This cruise visits scenic hot spots such as Sorrento and Amalfi on the Amalfi Coast, history-rich Siracusa in Sicily and three ports (Gallipoli, Taranto and Otranto) in lesser-known Puglia, located on the heel of boot-shaped Italy, before passengers disembark in Malta.

It manages to be intimate without feeling claustrophobic, although it is worth noting that none of its staterooms or suites has a balcony. There is, however, ample deck space for relaxation, with a pool and two hot tubs, as well as inviting alfresco bars and dining areas. September and October are a beautiful time to cruise to Italy, as the weather is still mild, but most of the crowds have left for the summer. Sail to the destination of your dreams from the departure port that works best for you. Similar to a traditional all inclusive vacation, food and entertainment on board is included in your cruise fare. Most cruise lines also offer a special and affordable drink package for your trip.

Enjoy everything that Italy has to offer from Rome to Naples then return to the cruise ship to a variety of onboard activities, one-of-a-kind entertainment, and dining options. Dress up for a romantic evening or enjoy a casual dining experience with the whole family. Offered on multiple dates in fall 2023, 2024 and 2025, this itinerary is chock full of port experiences; there are no sea days, and a total of 13 cities are visited. Viking includes one free guided shore excursion in each port, usually a panoramic bus tour or historic walking tour. Use that as an overview and then explore on your own or book one of the cruise line's longer or more specialized excursions.
